WILLIAM SALTER

William Salter arrived in Australia in 1844, a recently arrived immigrant from England and he was one of the first people to purchase land in the newly opened land survey known as the Barossa Valley. He built a stone house for his family naming it ‘Mamre Brook’ after Abraham’s spiritual home in the book of Genesis. Mamre Brook house has been a central feature of Saltram throughout its history; a constant link between the present and the past.
William Salter and Son’s first planted grapes in 1859, and in 1862 produced 8000 liters of a wine appropriately named ‘No.1 Shiraz’. This wine stands proudly today as the flagship Barossa Shiraz from Saltram, highly awarded and respected amongst Australian wine lovers for being a classic statement of intensity and finesse.

Saltram was established in South Australia’s Barossa Valley in 1859 by founder Willam Salter and his son Edward, then aged 22, founding the firm W Salter & Son and they began their vineyard operations with the clearing and planting of 10 acres of shiraz at the eastern end of the property. A shed was erected for making wine and a cellar was carved out of a nearby hill.
Many of Australia's most influential and celebrated winemakers have passed through the Saltram's cellar doors throughout its more than 150 years of the history. During this time, two families dominated winemaking; the Salters and Dolans. Three generations of Salters made wine until 1937 and the Dolans played a part at Saltram from the 1950s through until 2007.
After more than 150 years, the winemaking excellence continues with Saltram still producing quality premium wines loved and admired by many within the Australian wine industry.

The Barossa Valley lives, eats and breathes wine and the culture of the region is rich and unique. The Barossa is most famous for its rich, warm red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Grenache or a blend of these and others. Vines in the region date back to the 1840s and some of these original vineyards still produce tiny amounts of incredibly intense fruit. To the east of the Barossa Valley floor lies the cooler Eden Valley, which produces wonderful Riesling and fragrant, delicious reds that are sometimes a little more refined than the blockbusters from the Valley floor.
The Barossa Valley has remained at the heart of the Australian wine industry for over 150 years – William Salter, founder of Saltram was one of the first people to purchase land in Barossa Valley, not without reason; the climate, soils and elevation in Barossa Valley are all perfectly suited to growing grapevines.

BAROSSA VALLEY REGION

The ‘Valley’ is actually a long plain that sits at an average of 230m elevation, with small hills on the western side and the steeper Barossa Hills leading toward the higher Eden Valley on the east. The region includes the towns Nuriootpa, Tanunda, and Angaston.
The Barossa Valley receives moderate rainfall of approximately 520mm (mostly falling during the winter months), and has high summer evaporation and low relative humidity. This ideal climate produces relatively low disease pressure, which limits the need for chemicals in the vineyard and also maintains the natural environment.
The soils of the Barossa Valley are predominantly red brown loams, which are non-cracking, well structured and relatively free draining – making them ideal for growing grapevines.

Saltram is situated on Nuriootpa Road just a kilometre from the town of Angastonin the Barossa Valley. Saltram draws fruit from its own 45 hectare Saltram Vineyard that surrounds the Saltram Winery and Cellar Door as well as from other vineyards throughout the region. These vineyards are spread over the cooler hills of the Eden Valley to the warmer areas across the valley floor.
The Saltram Vineyard has many varieties planted, with the vast majority planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside some smaller plantings of non-mainstream varieties such as Malbec, Petit Verdot, Barbera, Tempranillo and Sangiovese.

For more than 150 years Saltram has celebrated the tradition and heritage behind the Barossa Valley, making flagship red wines of great style and taste. No history of the ‘Barossa’ or of the Australian wine industry is complete without the mention of Saltram.
